ARTIFACTS

A burgeoning collecting field and one which is now being seen as an investment vehicle as well. Hamish has worked continuously with artefacts for the last 5 years, producing at least 2 catalogues per year. The most famous and extensive artefacts sale, The Webster Collection, was completely catalogued by Hamish, a once in a lifetime opportunity, and a huge learning curve. Hamish has embraced ethnic iconography and with this being a very specialised collecting field knowledgeable advice is paramount.

ART

Hamish found his original visual stimuli in applied art. He started painting at an early age and this led to his attendance at Canterbury Fine Arts School. After spending time in Europe, much of it traversing the artistic centres, he returned and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Art History. Victorian Art and Architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement were possible influences on his venture into antiques, however the art knowledge was not lost. Hamish has attended and been involved with every art auction at Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) in the last 5 years . He has brought art into the auction house whilst collecting antiques and artefacts for sale and also had occasion to research artists for potential vendors.

MODERN DESIGN

10 years ago, in his antique shop, Hamish was pioneering the trend for modern design which is currently popular. Plastics, Scandinavian Furniture, Italian Glass and New Zealand pottery were just some of the fields which he championed.

He has all the appropriate reference books and experience with this genre and as modern design is currently in vogue Hamish has been lucky enough to have seen this trend develop and hence is familiar with what is rare and not so rare in the field.

ANTIQUES/DECORATIVE ARTS

The antique market fluctuates now more than ever. Despite that it can still be an investment area if structured properly. Hamish has been cataloguing photographing and researching all the Antique Sales at Dunbar Sloane for the last 5 years as well as having his own business in antiques before that. There would not be many people in the New Zealand more experienced in such a specialised profession. His knowledge extends from early Georgian Furniture, Clocks, Silver, Studio Pottery, Militaria, and Figurines etc, right through to Instruments.
